AMERICAN SPECIES OF DIORYCTRIA (LEPIDOPTERA: PYRALIDAE): IV. THE SCHUETZEELLA GROUP AND THE TAXONOMIC STATUS OF THE SPRUCE CONE MOTH

Abstract: Can. Ent. 105: 653-668 (1973) The spruce cone moth, identified as Dioryctria reniculella (Grote) by Heinrich and other authors, is described as D. reniculelloides n. sp. This and D. pseudotsugella Munroe form a compact group closely related to the European D. schuetzeella Fuchs. These three species are characterized. D. reniculella is sunk as a junior synonym of D. abietivorella (Grote), new synonymy. THE CANADIAN ENTOMOLOGIST

“…In the present study, three independent molecular loci, morphometric characters, and larval host association were examined to provide a test of the genomic integrity of two North American taxa. Historically, Dioryctria reniculelloides, a larger, darker, primarily eastern species, was considered distinct from Dioryctria pseudotsugella, which is smaller, paler, and western (Munroe 1959; Mutuura & Munroe 1973; Neunzig 2003). Based on the original descriptions, North American members of clades 3‐1 and 3‐2 corresponded to D. reniculelloides and D. pseudotsugella , respectively.…”

“…The hybrid index only achieved moderate success as a method of assignment when morphometric characters alone were used (Table 8). Larval host plant associations were considered an important diagnostic character for D. reniculelloides and D. pseudotsugella in the original descriptions (Munroe 1959; Mutuura & Munroe 1973; Neunzig 2003). When larval host plant was included as a variable in the hybrid index, the identification accuracy increased by as much as 30% (Table 8).…”
