American Society for Enhanced Recovery and Perioperative Quality Initiative Joint Consensus Statement on Patient-Reported Outcomes in an Enhanced Recovery Pathway

Abstract: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are measures of health status that come directly from the patient. PROs are an underutilized tool in the perioperative setting. Enhanced recovery pathways (ERPs) have primarily focused on traditional measures of health care quality such as complications and hospital length of stay. These measures do not capture postdischarge outcomes that are meaningful to patients such as function or freedom from disability. PROs can be used to facilitate shared decisions between patients and … Show more

“…For the first time, PROMs have been measured together with clinical outcomes in our hospital. Even if PROMs are currently being debated, there is a global consensus on their relevance with traditional measures of healthcare to improve clinical care [36][37][38]. Consistent evidence suggests obese employees could only reach approximately 80% of the productivity of a normal-weight worker [2,39].…”

“…We have chosen this method in order to answer the key question of "what happens when the complex intervention is implemented?". This method of evidence synthesis is in line with other published enhanced recovery reviews [3,5,7,15,16,41,42]. Meta-analyses will not be conducted due to the anticipated inherent methodological heterogeneity of the studies with regard to design, populations, procedures, and outcomes [43].…”
