American Clinical Neurophysiology Society Guideline 2: Guidelines for Standard Electrode Position Nomenclature

Abstract: This revision to the EEG Guidelines is an update incorporating current electroencephalography technology and practice and was previously published as Guideline 5. While the 10-10 system of electrode position nomenclature has been accepted internationally for almost two decades, it has not been used universally. The reasons for this and clinical scenarios when the 10-10 system provides additional localizing information are discussed in this revision. In addition, situations in which AF1/2, AF5/6, PO1/2 and PO5/… Show more

“…In certain circumstances, additional electrodes (such as F9, T9, P9; F10, T10, P10) might provide a better sampling of inferior frontal and temporal lobes in patients with suspected epilepsy and presurgical patients . Additional electrodes may be required for some patients . In the course of epilepsy surgery evaluation, when seizures cannot be localized adequately by scalp EEG, monitoring with intracranial EEG electrodes may be necessary …”

“…Electrophysiological data were recorded using Ag/AgCl electrodes with a BrainAmp DC amplifier (Brain Products GmbH, Gilching, Germany) with a sampling rate of 1000 Hz. 73 electrodes were placed according to the 10-10 system (Acharya et al, 2016), with location AFz serving as ground and the right earlobe as reference. Three electro-oculogram channels were placed in a triangular montage, with channels on the forehead and on the left and right infraorbital rim (Plöchl et al, 2012).…”
