America in the French Imagination: The French Settlers of Asylum, Pennsylvania, and Their Perceptions of 1790s America

Abstract: This article analyses a community of French aristocrats exiled to rural Pennsylvania during the 1790s and their perceptions of America. Their views of US culture shed fresh light on how immigrants to the United States envisioned America and offer new insight into French cultural critiques of the early American culture.
