Ameloblastic Carcinoma: A Rare Malignant Tumour in Maxillofacial Region

Abstract: Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare malignant odontogenic tumor with poor prognosis. It has an aggressive clinical course with extensive local destruction. It occurs primarily in the mandible. It may clinically present as a cystic lesion with benign clinical feature or as a large mass with ulceration, significant bone resorption and mobility of teeth in the affected region. Reliable evidence of it's biological activity along with extensive local destruction, direct extension of tumor, lymph node involvement … Show more

“…Mitotic figures may attain a count of 2 to 5 per high-power field. 8 Individual cell keratinization and keratin pearl formation may be seen. In our case, mild to moderate pleomorphism, keratin pearl formation and increased mitotic figures were important features in establishing final diagnosis.…”

“…Still, it is the most common malignancy among odontogenic tumours arising from the odontogenic epithelium [ 11 ]. It has an aggressive clinical course with extensive local destruction [ 12 ]. AC may arise de novo (i.e.…”

“…The majority of AC arise de novo, and only a few cases of malignant transformations of pre-existing ameloblastomas have been described previously [ 14 16 ]. The clinical features of AC are similar to those of ameloblastoma [ 12 ]; the histopathological features include the lack of differentiation, hypercellularity, a high mitotic index, vascular invasion and neural invasion. Metastasis into cervical lymph nodes or other sites including vertebrae, pleura, the skull, the parotid glands, the diaphragm and the liver are typical for AC [ 17 , 18 ].…”
