Ameliorative effect of Citrus aurantifolia and Cinnamomum burmannii extracts on diabetic complications in a hyperglycemic rat model

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the effects of Citrus aurantifolia and Cinnamomum burmannii extracts (Jermanis) on the number of pancreatic β-cells and levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in β-cells. Methods: Various doses of a combination of extracts of C. aurantifolia and C. burmannii were given orally to 25 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) every 2 h for 30 days. Doses of 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg/day C. aurantifolia extract were considered l… Show more

“…limonin) [27]. Fruit extract of lime has been found to reduce hyperglycemia via inhibition of pancreatic α‐amylase activity [28] and ameliorate diabetic complications [29], while its leaf essential oil decreases blood glucose level and increases hepatic glycogen concentration in diabetic rats [30]. This report attests to the ability of lime fruits in the management of diabetes and its complications, through the inhibition of polyol pathway enzymes – aldose reductase and sorbitol dehydrogenase.…”

“…A significant increase in the levels of SOD and glutathione was observed following 6 weeks of treatment (31). In another study, in Wistar rats treated orally with a combination of Citrus aurantifolia and Cinnamomum burmannii at 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg, exhibited an increase in the levels of SOD following treatment (32).…”

“…Whereas, lime juice in F3 contains chemical compounds with antioxidant properties, such as vitamin C, that was found to inhibit the aldose reductase enzyme. Other antioxidants in the lime juice reduced the advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation in sorbitol-aldolase reductase pathway and affected the glucose metabolismrelated enzyme gene expression (Mawarti et al, 2018). Moreover, the addition of lime juice increased the acidity of the formula, which promoted freshness, enhanced the perception of other tastes and might prolong the shelf life of a beverage (Marcus, 2019).…”
