Amelioration of oxidative stress by Tabernamontana divaricataon alloxan-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of ethanol extract of Tabernamontana divaricata (L.) and its ameliorative effect on oxidative stress in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.Materials and Methods:Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate (140 mg/kg body weight). Methanol extract of T. divaricata was administered at the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight in diabetic induced rats including glibenclamide (3 mg/kg) as a reference drug… Show more

“…Healthy Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 170-200 g (fed for 14 h with 5% glucose solution to prevent hypoglycemic shock) were injected intraperitoneally with 140 mg/kg alloxan monohydrate in distilled water [ 11 ] after their fasting blood sugar (FBS) were ascertained by the enzymatic glucose oxidase method using a commercial OneTouch Select™ blood glucose meter (LifeScan Inc, Milpitas, CA, China). Drops of blood for the test were obtained from the tail vein of the rats.…”

“…The results that came out showed a great amount of antidiabetic activity. Moreover, an additional decrease can also be seen in the oxidative damage effect that can be seen in rats 120 . Kanthlal et al suggest in their study that the insulin receptors may be alerted by an extract (methanolic).…”

“…Henceforth, it may result in the production of beta-stem cells in the subject of the test's pancreas. Antidiabetic activity can be seen by the compound conophylline, which is generally segregated from T. divaricata 120,121 . Increased plasma levels in diabetic rats were observed in the study.…”

“…The antidiabetic activity of T. divaricata methanol extract was examined on alloxan-induced diabetic rats [ 251 ]. The results displayed substantial antidiabetic activity, with an additional reduction in the effect of oxidative damage observed in rats [ 251 ]. The extracts exhibited a similar mechanism in relation to the positive control, glibenclamide.…”

“…The extracts exhibited a similar mechanism in relation to the positive control, glibenclamide. The study of Kanthlal et al [ 251 ] recommends that the methanol extract may alert the insulin receptors, therefore triggering a stimulation or production of beta-stem cells in the pancreas of the test subjects. The compound conophylline, which is often isolated from serval Tabernaemontana species, displayed antidiabetic activity [ 252 ].…”
