Amelioration of Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulcers in Rats Pretreated with Phycobiliproteins of Arthrospira (Spirulina) Maxima

Abstract: Phycobiliproteins of Arthrospira (Spirulina) maxima have attracted attention because of their potential therapeutic antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to assess the possible antiulcerogenic activity of these phycobiliproteins (ExPhy) against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats. To explore the possible mechanisms of action, we examined antioxidant defense enzymes (e.g., catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase), as well as the level of lipid peroxidation (MDA) and the histopa… Show more

“…As the costs and side effects of synthetic anti-ulcer drugs are high, the need for new, safer and more affordable compounds is ever growing. 27 Recently, C-Phycocyanin has attracted increasing attention as a potential functional and healthy food. 28 It was documented for its numerous crucial effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities, and F I G U R E 6 Immunohistochemical staining of NF-κB in stomach tissue; A, Normal control group showed minimal brown immunostaining for NF-κB in a few glandular acini.…”

“…The Ulcer Index (UI) and inhibition percentage (I%) were calculated with the following formula (TMA, Total mucosal area. TAML, Total area of mucosal lesion) UI=TAML(mm2)×100/TMA(mm2)I%=UAcontrol-UAtreated/UAcontrol×100%…”

“…21 Ethanol was reported to facilitate gastric secretion, which may contribute to some degree of ulceration. 22,23 Histamine receptor-2 (H 2 )-mediated gastric secretion is not involved in alcoholic ulcers, since ethanol-induced lesions are not suppressed by cimetidine. Instead, it was proposed that static and radical reactions in the mucosa are the main cascade for the induction of alcoholic mucosa injury.…”
