Ameliorating Efficacy of Curcumin on Cadmium Induced Thyroid Dysfunction in Albino Rats

Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) is one of the hazardous heavy metals as it causes various forms of physiological and hormonal imbalances. The aim of the present study was to investigate pharmacological effects of curcumin, a derivative of Curcuma longa Linn., in the prevention of oxidative stress induced by CdCl 2 on the thyroid gland of albino rats. In this study, rats were divided into 5 groups (n=5). Group 1 rats kept as control. Group 2 rats administered a single oral dose of 50mg/kg body weight of CdCl 2 on day 1 and left f… Show more

“…One of the most well-characterized mechanisms of Cd toxicity is oxidative damage [ 25 ]. When cells are exposed to Cd, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can increase, and the antioxidant defense systems can become compromised, leading to oxidative damage to cellular macromolecules such as lipids, proteins, and DNA [ 18 , 20 ]. This can cause cellular dysfunction and tissue damage in various organs.…”

“…Cd can combine with Se to form insoluble complexes. This interaction can make it challenging for the thyroid gland to produce and utilize selenoproteins [ 19 , 20 ]. Cd exposure has also been linked to an increased risk of testicular autoimmunity and other autoimmune disorders, in addition to impairing thyroid function.…”

“…[21] It is found to be effective against numerous disorders but the most significant property of Cur is that being an antioxidant and therapeutic agent with various constructive functions, it has no side effects. [22] Therefore, this report addresses the changes in oxidative stress marker enzymes along with the alterations in total protein and cholesterol content in testes homogenate after acute Cd administration and whether the supplementation of Cur can rectify Cdinduced testicular oxidative injury in experimental rats.…”
