Amebic liver abscess by Entamoeba histolytica

Abstract: Amebic liver abscesses (ALAs) are the most commonly encountered extraintestinal manifestation of human invasive amebiasis, which results from Entamoeba histolytica ( E. histolytica ) spreading extraintestinally. Amebiasis can be complicated by liver abscess in 9% of cases, and ALAs led to almost 50000 fatalities worldwide in 2010. Although there have been fewer and fewer cases in the past several years, ALAs remain an important public health problem in endemic area… Show more

“…Upon contamination, there is excystation of the parasite within the small intestines, followed by the invasion of the trophozoites that lyse the colonic epithelium. As part of the inflammatory process, neutrophils then further damage the colonic epithelium leading to extraintestinal contamination via hematogenous spread to the liver and peritoneum resulting in further necrosis, abscess formation, and perforation [ 2 , 7 - 9 ].…”

“…Such differentiation is crucial in order to prevent a delay in the implementation of appropriate therapy. Determination of an accurate diagnosis of ALA relies mainly on laboratory tests that use immunological, molecular, and parasitological methods to confirm EH in different specimens[ 55 ].…”

“…The chest X-ray showed improvement within one week (Figure 1) and was normal at the end of therapy. caused by Entamoeba histolytica [3], and hydatid disease, caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus [4]. The cases mostly remain subclinical, but they may be symptomatic.…”
