“…Although it is a species with clearly wild habits, commonly found in canids, felids and described in procyonids and mustelids (Labruna et al, 2005), this is the first report of parasitism by A. ovale on domestic dogs in the studied region. Ticks are obligate ectoparasite arthropods of the class Arachnida distributed worldwide and can parasitize many animals. They constitute one of the most important groups of vectors of infectious diseases, including zoonoses. The objective of this study was to report the parasitism by Amblyomma ovale Koch, 1844 in a domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758) in Santa Maria, in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two specimens of ectoparasites found on a domestic dog, living in a rural property, were sent to the Laboratory of Veterinary Parasitology at the Federal University of Santa Maria for taxonomic identification. The two specimens found were classified as adult male and female of A. ovale. Through this study, the parasitism of this species is reported for the first time in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a domestic dog, allowing the infestation and transmission of diseases to humans.

Eight hunting dogs were visited by a state veterinarian on the island of Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, as owners reported anorexia and paralysis in five of their dogs. The veterinarian observed a combination of clinical signs consistent with tick-borne illness, including fever, anorexia, anaemia, lethargy and paralysis. Blood and ticks were collected from each dog and submitted to a diagnostic laboratory for analysis. Microscopic analysis revealed a mixed infection of intracytoplasmic organisms consistent with Babesia spp. (erythrocyte) and Ehrlichia spp. (monocyte), respectively, from one dog, while a complete blood count indicated a regenerative anaemia (n = 1; 12.5%), non-regenerative anaemia (n = 4; 50%), neutrophilia (n = 3; 37.5%), lymphocytosis (n = 2; 25%), thrombocytopaenia (n = 3; 37.5%) and pancytopaenia (n = 1; 12.5%). DNA isolated from the eight blood samples and 20 ticks (16 Rhipicephalus sanguineus and 4 Amblyomma ovale) were subjected to conventional PCR and next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene for Anaplasma/Ehrlichia and Babesia/Theileria/Hepatozoon, respectively. The DNA of Ehrlichia spp., closely related to Ehrlichia canis, was detected in the blood of three dogs (37.5%), Anaplasma spp., closely related to Anaplasma marginale, in two (25%), Babesia vogeli in one dog (12.5%) and seven ticks (35%) and Hepatozoon canis and Anaplasma spp., in one tick (5%), respectively. These findings highlight the need to test both the vector and host for the presence of tick-borne pathogens when undertaking diagnostic investigations. Further studies are also warranted to elucidate the susceptibility of canids to Anaplasma marginale.

Carrapatos são artrópodes de grande importância para a saúde, principalmente por transmitirem doenças aos seus hospedeiros. Espécies do gênero Amblyomma possuem uma ampla variedade de hospedeiros, incluindo o parasitismo em humanos, podendo ser considerados potenciais transmissores de rickettsias do grupo das bactérias causadoras da Febre Maculosa Brasileira (FBM). O objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre as principais espécies de Amblyomma transmissoras da FMB. Foram realizadas pesquisas nas bases de dados de plataformas como SciELO, LILACS e PubMed, e os descritores utilizados foram: “Amblyomma” e “Febre Maculosa Brasileira”, nos idiomas português e inglês. Foram encontrados 55 trabalhos científicos e 05 teses sobre a temática e os resultados confirmaram que os carrapatos das espécies Amblyomma sculptum, A. aureolatum e A. ovale são os principais vetores da FMB, sendo a capivara, os cavalos e os cães os mais importantes reservatórios da cadeia epidemiológica da doença. As regiões Sudeste e Sul lideram os números de casos e óbitos em humanos. É importante conhecer o ciclo de vida, o ambiente e as condições ambientais favoráveis para a manutenção dessas espécies de carrapatos, a fim de diminuir a ocorrência de zoonoses transmitidas por eles, evitando também a expansão da FMB.
