Using a combination of observations of fate of ovules in matured fruits and of fluorescence techniques to study pollen tube growth and fertilization of ovules, we examined patterns of seed formation within pods in natural populations of two species of Lathyrus, L. sylvestris and L. latifolius. We also examined variation in these patterns within and among populations and between two consecutive years. In both species, only a portion of the ovules were fertilized. Fertilization occurs over a period of several days and ovules at the stigmatic end of the fruit are the first to be fertilized. Fertilized ovules farthest from the stigma are closest to the maternal nutrition. The pattern of embryo abortion is interpreted as a balance between the early start and genetic quality of embryos near the stigma, on the one hand, and the nutritional advantage of proximity to maternal nutrients, on the other. Differences between the two species in patterns of seed maturation are postulated to be related to differences in breeding system. In L. sylvestris, a higher frequency of selling leads to less genetic diversity of pollen deposited on the stigma, lower competition among potential sires, and a more nearly random pattern of ovule fertilization and maturation within the pod.

1. Seed production can be affected by cattle grazing, insect herbivores, and seed predators. Bush vetch, Vicia sepium L. (Fabaceae), possess extra floral nectaries (EFNs), which can attract ants that act as plant defenders.2. In this field study, four different manipulations were used to investigate interactions between V. sepium , ants, aphids, and seed predators, mainly Bruchus atomarius. The experiment was set up in grazed and non-grazed plots in a semi-natural grassland in south-central Sweden.3. Grazing negatively affected number of V. sepium buds, flowers, and pods. Seed set, defined as the number of developed seeds per number of ovules in a pod, was higher in grazed plots. Ant abundance, however, was not affected by grazing. Ten different ant species were found on V. sepium and the number of ants was positively correlated with the presence of EFNs. Aphids were found only when ants were excluded from the plants. Pod and seed production of V. sepium plants was not affected by the presence of ants. The seed predator B. atomarius was not affected by the presence of ants. No support was found for the supposition that V. sepium benefited from attracting ants by producing extra floral nectar.4. A small observational study of V. sepium plants in shrub ( Rosa dumalis ) plots compared with grassland plots was added to the experimental study . Vicia sepium plants were longer and had higher seed-set (seeds/ovules) in shrub plots than in grassland plots.

Résumé Bruchus affinis Frölich (Coléoptère, Bruchidae), est une espèce univoltine attirée sélectivement par les fleurs de L. sylvestris, qui constitue l'une des trois plantes dont les larves consomment les graines. Il s'agit d'un insecte typiquement spécialisé à l'exploitation de plantes particulières. Cependant, les femelles distribuent leurs œufs sur les gousses jeunes de L. sylvestris sans tenir compte, ni de leur disponibilité en graines, ni du nombre d'œufs déjà présents, alors que le développement des larves est solitaire. Les larves néonates perforent la gousse et gagnent des ovules. Plusieurs larves peuvent atteindre le même ovule, mais une seule se développe dans la graine en formation. Le nombre d'œufs pondus sur les premières gousses dépasse largement le nombre de graines qui se développeront dans ces gousses. La surabondance d'œufs sur les premières gousses entraîne une forte mortalité. Les déplacements des larves dans les gousses et leur comportement de pénétration dans les graines en croissance ne suppriment pas la compétition intraspécifique larvaire. Aucune adaptation n'ajuste la distribution des œufs et la répartition des larves à l'utilisation optimale des disponibilités en graines. Aucune stratégie adaptative ne limite le gaspillage de progéniture; la spécialisation trophique n'a pas entraîné un comportement reproducteur optimisant l'utilisation des ressources et la survie de la descendance. Bien que la période étudiée corresponde à moins de 10% de la durée du cycle annuel de B. affinis, la très forte mortalité observée entre la ponte et l'installation dans les graines constitue vraisemblablement le facteur‐clé des fluctuations annuelles de la population. Les causes de cette mortalité varient d'une station à l'autre, et il est impossible de les hiérarchiser. This insect is a typical specialist in its feeding preference. However, females distribute their eggs on young pods of L. sylvestris without taking into account how many seeds are available or how many eggs are already present, whereas the development of the larvae is solitary. Neonate larvae perforate the pods and go into the ovules. Several larvae can reach the same ovule, but only one grows out completely in the developing seed. The number of eggs laid on the first pods exceed largely the number of seeds growing in these pods. The surplus of eggs on first pods leads to a high mortality.
