Ambiguity and the Bayesian Paradigm

Abstract: This is a survey of some of the recent decision-theoretic literature involving beliefs that cannot be quanti…ed by a Bayesian prior. We discuss historical, philosophical, and axiomatic foundations of the Bayesian model, as well as of several alternative models recently proposed. The de…nition and comparison of ambiguity aversion and the updating of non-Bayesian beliefs are brie ‡y discussed. Finally, several applications are mentioned to illustrate the way that ambiguity (or "Knightian uncertainty") can change… Show more

“…Amarante [11] introduces a model of decision under ambiguity that includes the aforementioned ones. We refer to the recent survey of Gilboa and Marinacci [12] for more on this topic, including other models of decision under ambiguity and applications of these models to several problems in economic theory.…”

“…Leibniz argues in his Theodicy (1710) that understanding is not a necessity-it only provides a guide-and that the decision exists only through the effort of action. In terms of expected utility theory [1], Odysseus rationally opted for the path that minimized the maximum damage.…”
