Ambient oxygen ingress rate method—an alternative method to Ox‐Tran for measuring oxygen transmission rate of whole packages

Abstract: The ambient oxygen ingress rate method (AOIR) is an alternative method to OxTran for measuring the oxygen transmission rates (OTR) of whole packages. The objective of the present work was (a) to compare OTR values obtained by the two methods, and (b) to evaluate the use of the AOIR method for measuring OTR at realistic food storage temperatures and humidity levels. The AOIR method gave equal OTR values compared to the Ox-Tran method for the ®ve different types of whole packages used in the experiment, with OTR… Show more

“…The AOIR and OTR permeability results are comparable (Table 1), which confirmed earlier findings (Larsen et al 2000). The PET sheet had a permeability of 890 ± 10 ml µm m -2 day -1 atm -1 which is significantly higher than that of the barrier materials and is therefore not influencing the results.…”

“…All samples were measured with the AOIR method. Some samples were selected for measurement by the OTR method as well, in order to assess our setup to that used in previous studies (Larsen et al 2000). Table 1 -Mean values for thicknesses, OTR and AOIR values of the barrier layers are shown in the columns 2-4 for the various samples (column 1).…”

“…The AOIR measurements are taken using a zirconium sensor instead of a pressure sensor. 58 In this case, both sides of the cell are flushed either with air (upstream) or nitrogen (downstream). The sensor measures the increase in oxygen concentration on the downstream side, which is used to calculate the permeate flow.…”

“…The ambient oxygen ingress rate (AOIR) method measures the OTR of finished packages and was recently demonstrated to give equal OTR values when compared to values measured by a Mocon Ox-Tran instrument. 4 The AOIR method requires relatively inexpensive equipment and has a high capacity. By using the AOIR method it is also possible to measure the OTR at different temperature and humidity conditions.…”
