“…Figure a shows that for periods between 6 and 30 s the average group velocity uncertainties are less than 0.1 km/s, dropping significantly for intermediate periods to ~0.05 km/s. For phase velocities, the standard deviation is much smaller, ranging from ~0.06 to ~0.1 km/s, with a minimum of 0.04 km/s at 14–22 s. Our uncertainties are similar to those reported in independent studies with similar data sets (e.g., Dias et al, ; Lin et al, ; Mottaghi et al, ). The greatest uncertainties are for periods >30 s, which we believe are due to the decrease in amplitude of the microseismic noise spectrum at those periods that make it difficult to recover the empirical Green's function.…”

“…Indeed, an ever increasing number of ambient seismic noise studies have been produced during the last decade mapping different parts of the globe (e.g., Abdetedal et al, ; Bensen et al, ; Boué et al, ; Haned et al, ; Lin et al, ; Mottaghi et al, ; Saygin & Kennett, ; Shapiro et al, ; Stehly et al, ; Villaseñor et al, ; Ward et al, ; Yang et al, ; Yao et al, ). These studies have conclusively demonstrated that empirical Green's function recovery from average cross correlations of ambient noise between pairs of seismic stations is capable of providing tight constraints on upper and middle crustal structure.…”

“…Then we can perform tomographic inversions using the surface wave velocities for each period as input (e.g. Shapiro et al 2005;Sabra et al 2005;Villaseñor et al 2007;Yang et al 2007;Lin et al 2008;Mottaghi et al 2013;Silveira et al 2013;Nicholson et al 2014;Dias et al 2015). Finally, the inversion of group velocities in each point of a grid can be used to obtain layered profiles of S-wave velocity, which are further interpolated to compute 2-D maps.…”
