Ambient noise measurements in Rawalpindi–Islamabad, twin cities of Pakistan: a step towards site response analysis to mitigate impact of natural hazard

Abstract: Earthquakes are one among the highly dangerous geological hazards. The damage from earthquakes is greatly influenced by the local geological conditions. The history of Pakistan is full of severe earthquakes that caused the mass destruction at national scale. Major earthquake-affected areas in Pakistan are mainly concentrated in the north and western sections of the country. Site response analysis is an initial step towards seismic risk assessment. The present study aims at local site effects by acquiring data … Show more

“…South Asian countries are vulnerable to natural disasters [1][2][3], and various scientists have worked on schemes for mitigating the impact of the disaster [4][5][6][7][8]. A high death toll and economic and infrastructural damages from natural disasters are not only linked to the event's severity; an ignorance of scientific facts and uncontrolled urban sprawl also contribute to the misery [9,10].…”

“…Landslide susceptibility zonation (LSZ) mapping is a preliminary step towards landslide hazard mitigation [8][9][10][11][12]. The practice of LSZ mapping involves the identification of zones with a higher probability of experiencing landslides, based on an analysis of various geo-environmental factors [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. LSZ is based on the principle that the set of conditions responsible for past and present landslides will likely also help to predict future landslide occurrences.…”

“…in Pakistan. [19] estimated site effects of local soils in Fateh Jang region; [20] performed site response analysis to mitigate the impact on natural hazards; [10] performed seismic microzonation of Islamabad-Rawalpindi metropolitan area; [21] produced microzonation map for Abbottabad basin and its immediate surrounding; [22] highlighted the application of machine learning techniques on ambient noise data for Potwar region; and [23] performed site response studies in Peshawar using HVSR Nakamura technique.…”
