Amazement and Trepidation: Implications of AI-Based Natural Language Production for the Teaching of Writing

Abstract: AI-based natural language production systems are currently able to produce unique text with minimal human intervention. Because such systems are improving at a very fast pace, teachers who expect students to produce their own writing—engaging in the complex processes of generating and organizing ideas, researching topics, drafting coherent prose, and using feedback to make principled revisions that both improve the quality of the text and help them to develop as writers—will confront the … Show more

“…Incorporate AI tools into discussions and assignments and educate your students on their judicious use and the limitations of textgenerator prose by sharing substandard text examples highlighting the value of human (including students') writing (Mills, 2023a;Anson & Straume, 2022;McMurtrie, 2022McMurtrie, , 2023Fyfe, 2022;D'Agostino, 2022).…”

“…With AI playing an increasingly influential role in second language education, it is not unlikely that both learners and educators might be contributing to the systems and cocreating with algorithms [66,67]. For this to be done fairly, designing for learning requires looking at the AI system from a broad sociological outlook taking into account the possible impact on the lives of the individuals [114].…”

“…This tool is an AI-based language-learning model that is currently widely utilized for text generation (Schulman et al, 2022). ChatGPT is supposed to be able to produce customized texts with minimal human intervention (Anson & Straume, 2022) which challenges the purpose of testing and evaluating English for foreign learners (EFL). Can existing assessment systems accurately represent learner proficiency?…”

“…Chat GPT, for example, is a sophisticated model of text construction (Schulman et al, 2022). In fact, according to Anson and Straume (2022), it can generate weighted texts with very minimal human intervention. By using AI-assisted tools, Indonesian EFL students may be more confident in producing English writing output and may have the opportunity to improve their writing performance.…”
