“…AE is a rare but highly malignant form of echinococcosis, and it is caused by cyclophyllid tapeworm E. multilocularis . AE is generally presented in liver initially, and the majority of E. multilocularis infections is confined to the liver but may later spread to other organs, [ 14 ] mainly via blood circulation or lymphatic system. [ 13 , 14 ] In an analysis of 117 AE patients from eastern France, pulmonary metastasis occurred in about 20% of the patients whereas cerebral metastasis in only 1% and the simultaneous lung and brain metastases occurred in 1.1% of the patients.…”

“…With regard to human cases, an increased number of AE cases have been reported recently, who received immunosuppressive treatment for organ transplantation, malignant- and chronic inflammatory diseases (Gruener et al 2008; Kayacan et al 2008; Gaultier et al 2009; Geyer et al 2011; Kern et al . 2011; Weiner et al 2011 and Dentan et al 2012).…”

“…Fast progression of the lesions in a patient with AIDS (Sailer et al, 1997) and conversely the protective effect of efficacious anti-HIV treatment in another patient (Zingg et al, 2004) have confirmed the role of immune suppression in patients with AE. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a number of AE cases have been reported in patients who received other kinds of organ transplantation and/or were treated with imunosuppresive drugs for malignant or chronic inflammatory diseases (Dentan et al, 2012;Gaultier et al, 2009;Geyer et al, 2011;Gruener et al, 2008;Kayacan et al, 2008; The increase in the occurrence of AE in such patients was evidenced in a systematic study using the data from the population-based AE French registry database (Chauchet et al, 2014): 50 patients were found with such immunosuppressionassociated (IS) conditions before or at AE diagnosis, among 509 AE cases diagnosed from 1982 to 2012. There was a significant increase in AE incidence in such patients, and significantly higher increase than in non-IS cases between the last 2 decades.…”
