Activated carbon is produced from Burmese grapes using NaOH as the activator under microwave irradiation. Through scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis methods, the activated carbon material is found to have a rough and uneven surface with the formation of pores, an amorphous structure, and possesses hydroxy, C–H, carbonyl, alkene, and ether functional groups. The surface area (478.5 m2 g−1) and pore size (about 3.4 nm) are calculated from the adsorption N2 equation. The adsorption mechanism of activated carbon is evaluated and follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model (large single adsorption) and the Langmuir isotherm model (physical interaction). The factors affecting ciprofloxacin adsorption using activated carbon derived from Burmese grapes are also evaluated and optimized by the response surface method model based on influencing factors including the contact time, the solution pH, the antibiotic concentration, and the material dosage. The optimal parameters are as follows: pH = 6.26, concentration = 58.9 mg L−1, content = 0.15 g L−1, time = 54 min. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption capacity predicted from the model is 191.33 mg g−1 with an efficiency of 41.35%.

Extraction conditions can exert a remarkable influence on extraction efficiency. The aim of this study was to improve the extraction efficiency of carotenoids from Dunaliella parva (D. parva). Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and 95% ethanol were used as the extraction solvents. The extraction time, extraction temperature and the proportions of mixed solvent were taken as influencing factors, and the experimental scheme was determined by Central Composite Design (CCD) of Design Expert 10.0.4.0 to optimize the extraction process of carotenoids from D. parva. The absorbance values of the extract at 665 nm, 649 nm and 480 nm were determined by a microplate spectrophotometer, and the extraction efficiency of carotenoids was calculated. Analyses of the model fitting degree, variance and interaction term 3D surface were performed by response surface analysis. The optimal extraction conditions were as follows: extraction time of 20 min, extraction temperature of 40 °C, and a mixed solvent ratio (DMSO: 95% ethanol) of 3.64:1. Under the optimal conditions, the actual extraction efficiency of carotenoids was 0.0464%, which was increased by 18.19% (the initial extraction efficiency of 0.03926%) with a lower extraction temperature (i.e. lower energy consumption) compared to the standard protocol.

Two carbon composite materials were prepared by mixing avocado biochar and methyl polysiloxane (MK). Firstly MK was dissolved in ethanol, and then the biochar was added at different times. In sample 1 (R1), the time of adding biochar was immediately after dissolving MK in ethanol, and in sample 2 (R2), after 48 h of MK dissolved in ethanol. The samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements obtaining specific surface areas (SBET) of 115 m² g -1 (R1) and 580 m² g -1 (R2). The adsorbents were further characterized using scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, adsorption of vapors of n-heptane and water, thermal analysis, Bohem titration, pHpzc, C H N elemental analysis. R1 and R2 adsorbents were employed as adsorbents to remove the antibiotic ciprofloxacin from the waters. The t1/2 and t0.95 based on the interpolation of Avrami-fractional-order were 20.52 and 246.4 min (R1) and 14.00 and 157.6 min (R2), respectively. Maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) based on the Liu isotherm were 10.77 (R1) and 63.80 mg g -1 (R2) for ciprofloxacin. The thermodynamic studies showed a spontaneous and exothermic process for both samples, and the value of H° is compatible with physical adsorption.
