Aluminum Building Scrap Wire, Take-Out Food Container, Potato Peels and Bagasse as Valueless Waste Materials for Nitrate Removal from Water supplies

Abstract: Purpose Two types of active acidic alumina derived from aluminum building wire scraps (AlBWS) and aluminum takeout food container waste (AlTFC), as well, two effective types of activated carbon prepared from potato peels (ACPP) and sugarcane bagasse (ACSB) for removal of nitrate ions were utilized in this study. Methods Adsorbent samples were prepared with highly porous structure and large specific surface area above 200 m 2 g −1. Also, low calcinations temperatures and low-priced chemicals were used. “…Recycling of Al waste to more beneficial products was reported by Osman et al for the successful conversion of Al foil to useful γ-Al2O3 which was used as an acidic catalyst [22]. Furthermore, El-Nahas et al showcased the recycling and valorization of Al building wire scraps (AlBWS) and Al takeout food container waste (AlTFC) to active alumina for the removal of nitrate ions from water supplies [23].…”

“…The activities by the artisans in these sites have greatly polluted the soil and groundwater within and around their environs [8]. Many environmentally unfriendly chemical species like petroleum hydrocarbons [9][10][11][12][13][14][15], polychlorinated biphenyls [16], polybrominated diphenyl ethers [17], polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [18][19][20], anions [21][22][23] and heavy metals [24][25][26][27][28][29] from automobile repair and maintenance activities have been found in the air, soil and portable water sources in these areas.…”

“…El-Nahas et al (2019) examined active acid alumina modified aluminum building wire scraps (AlBWS), aluminum take-out food container waste (AlTFC), activated carbon from potato peelings (ACPP), and sugarcane bagasse (ACSB) for nitrate removal from real and synthetic samples. The results of their study reported excellent removal capacity for nitrate removal from groundwater samples (El-Nahas et al 2019). Double layered hydroxide was also reported to remove nitrate.…”
