Aluminum alloy foam core sandwich panels fabricated from die casting aluminum alloy by friction stir welding route

Abstract: An aluminum foam sandwiches (AFSs) consisting of ADC12 Al-Si-Cu die casting aluminum alloy foam and ADC6 Al-Mg die casting aluminum alloy face plates were fabricated. Using ADC12 die casting plates containing large amounts of gases as the starting material of the foam, ADC12 foam can be fabricated without using a blowing agent. Using FSW, both the uniform dispersion of the segregated gases and pore stabilization powder in the ADC12 die casting plates used to fabricate a foamable ADC12 precursor and the bonding… Show more

“…During FSW, the Al plate is softened by the heat generated by the friction between the rotating tool and the Al plate. The temperature during the FSW of Al is approximately 673-773 K 6,7) , which is lower than the foaming temperature of the Al foam precursor (approximately 832-973 K 1,2,[8][9][10] ). FSW was rst developed for the welding of Al, although it is now used for the welding of copper (Cu) and steel 6,11,12) .…”

“…Unlike conventional sandwich panels where a high strength adhesive is used to bond the foam core and the solid sheets, Utsonomia and Hangai et al have devised a novel process in which mixing of the foaming agent and bonding takes place simultaneously. This includes sandwich panels comprising of ADC12 foam with ADC6 cladding [16]. Fabrication of Al-steel sandwich structures has also been reported [17].…”
