Aluminium allergy

Abstract: 13 children ranging in age from 1 to 13 years and 1 adult patient had positive patch tests to 2% AlCl3 in water. 13 of them had pruritic excoriated papules, 9 at sites of hyposensitization therapy with aluminium-bound pollen extracts, and 4 at sites of childhood immunization with an aluminium-bound vaccine (Di-Te-Pol). For the 1 adult patient, the positive patch test was not considered to be of current relevance. Aluminium is most likely to sensitize when present in preparations used for immunization.

“…Another possible explanation for the correlation be tween aluminum and uremic pruritus could be a possible aluminum-induced allergy and there are some recent reports regarding aluminum-induced allergy and skin irri tation [18,19], In our study, we found that when serum calcium-phos phorus product exceeded 70 (calcium and phosphate in mg/dl) patients were at higher risk of suffering from pruri tus. In patients with uremia, modcrate-to-severe hyper phosphatemia is common and may be associated with generalized pruritus, since pruritus tends to resolve as serum phosphorus is decreased.…”

“…In the literature, there are reports of patients reacting positively to an aluminium salt and, at the same time, reacting positively or negatively to an empty Finn Chamber ® made of elemental aluminium (3,6,(11)(12)(13)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26). There are only three other studies/case reports on simultaneous testing with aluminium chloride hexahydrate at 2.0% and 10.0% and with an empty Finn Chamber ® (Table 4).…”

“…Local hair growth, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and eczema in the itchy area have been reported . The itching nodules are often related to contact allergy to aluminium, as shown by a positive epicutaneous (patch) test result . However, there is no established patch test preparation for diagnosing aluminium contact allergy.…”
