Alternative Strategy for Alzheimer’s Disease: Stress Response Triggers

Abstract: Stress resistance capacity is a hallmark of longevity protection and survival throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. Latent pathway activation of protective cascades, triggered by environmental challenges to tolerate heat, oxygen deprivation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), diet restriction, and exercise provides tolerance to these stresses. Age-related changes and disease vulnerability mark an increase in damage, like damage induced by environmental challenges. An alternative approach to immunotherapy inter… Show more

“…Strenuous exercise disturbs the antioxidant equilibrium by increasing ROS levels. However, regular exercise upregulates endogenous antioxidant levels and reduces oxidative damage (34). As continued exposure to uncontrolled oxidative stress is an initiator of various chronic diseases and cancer, cells have developed a range of antioxidant strategies, including enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants (35).…”

“…Considering these beneficial effects from the initial DNA damage, it is tempting to suggest that periodic application of a small amount of oxidative damage to the brain would be beneficial to brain health. This method of using low level stressors to upregulate protection systems has recently been proposed as a method of reducing the impact of neurodegenerative diseases (Smith Sonneborn, 2012;Stranahan and Mattson, 2012).…”

“…Tolerance strategies and drugs employed to treat the common stresses are candidates to treat HIV. Mimetics of tolerance, and stress resistance agents used to tolerate stress in different organisms are reservoirs for drug intervention [1][2][3] applicable in HIV therapeutics.…”
