Alternative Esthetic Management of Fluorosis and Hypoplasia Stains: Blending Effect Obtained with Resin Infiltration Techniques

Abstract: This case study allows a better understanding of the concept of the resin infiltration technique applied in other types of porous lesions, increasing its use as a therapeutic alternative for esthetic purposes in the philosophy of minimally invasive dentistry.

“…Beyond the ambit of postorthodontic WSL, the technique of resin infiltration has been shown to be have abilities not only for inhibiting the progression of caries lesions and concealing WSL but also for improving the appearance of dental fluorosis 30,31 or penetrating enamel affected by molar-incisor hypomineralization. 32 It may be expected that infiltration will be an established treatment option for these indications in a few years.…”

“…1 Since the fluorotic and hypomineralized enamel exhibits a subsurface reduced mineral content, similar to an initial caries lesion, the indication of the low-viscosity infiltration resin technique was recently broadened to mask the undesirable esthetic appearance in these cases. 19,24 Nevertheless, because of the high variety of traumatic hypomineralization topographic characteristics, the results of treatment using infiltration are difficult to predict. In fact, this case series presents an improvement of the esthetic appearance of the white discolorations, with patient satisfaction.…”

“…In a contemporary publication, Wang et al 9 proposed a resin infiltration technique following macroabrasion and microabrison combined with home bleaching therapy as a minimally invasive approach for the esthetic correction of a severe fluorosis case. Munoz et al 13 preferred to apply the resin infiltration technique alone and the outcome of the treatment for a mild case was satisfying. The ability of resins to penetrate into the porous lesion body of enamel lesions was described over 30 years ago 14 .…”

“…First of all, in order to protect soft tissues from any damage of the microabrasion paste, a light-cured resin barrier (OpalDam Green, Ultradent Products Inc, [12][13][14][15][16][17] UT, USA) and a lip&cheek retractor (OptraGate, Ivoclar Vivadent Inc, NY, USA) were applied. Both patient and clinician wore protective glasses for protection of their eyes.…”
