“…After an endurance race, conventional parameters suggest a less pronounced decrease of longitudinal shortening compared to ejection fraction, which also refers to a post-race functional shift [23]. Moreover, there is a growing interest in separated evaluation of longitudinal and radial RV function in pediatric cardiology patients [24]. These studies have shown the importance of the varying contribution of longitudinal and radial component in certain conditions, but did not provide distinct quantitative assessment for these phenomena.…”

“…The RV fractional area change obtained from a four‐chamber focused RV view is probably the only assessment in the setting of perioperative care that captures composite radial and longitudinal function . It has been demonstrated that the radial function plays a greater than expected role when TAPSE values fall below 15 mm in healthy children . The preoperative TAPSE (about 17 mm) was close to this value while the postoperative values were below this threshold in our patient population.…”

“…The RVWD is a novel original parameter that we devised for the evaluation of the RVAW motion in the radial direction . We found that the distance of the RVAW from the IVS was important in the evaluation of the geometrical relationship between the RV muscle fiber direction and its contraction pattern.…”

“…Specifically, the RV primarily consists of two cardiac muscles, the interventricular septum (IVS) and the RV free wall. The muscle fibers of the RV free wall are arranged longitudinally from the tricuspid valve to the apex under normal hemodynamic conditions; however, its orientation is altered from longitudinal to the lateral direction during condition of RV overload, which results in an increase in radial RV contraction . The relationship between the longitudinal RV contractility and the radial RV contractility that are derived from the physiological geometrical change has not been studied yet.…”
