Alternating temperature combined with darkness resets base temperature for germination (Tb) in photoblastic seeds of Lippia and Aloysia (Verbenaceae)

Abstract: Thermal time models for seed germination assume a continuum of rate responses in the sub-optimal temperature range. Generally, the models describe germination performance in non-dormant seeds at constant temperatures, yet alternating temperature (AT) is a feature of many natural environments. We studied the possible interacting effects of AT on germination progress in photoblastic seeds of three aromatic-medicinal Verbenaceae species in the genera Lippia and Aloysia. For Lippia turbinata f. turbinata and L. tu… Show more

“…Such models should also account for germination rate dependency on precipitation loss and gain (e.g. hydro-time; Stevens et al, 2014), and the effect of environmental temperatures that alternate and transgress thermal thresholds to reveal whether temperature shifts per se have an effect on germination (Fern andez-Pascual et al, 2015;Galindez et al, 2017;Murdoch, Roberts, & Goedert, 1989). Identifying species which will be overall winners and losers of climate change throughout their entire life cycle is complex.…”

“…Seeds of many Burseraceae are reported to have PD or to be non dormant (Baskin and Baskin 2014). Limited information is available in the literature on seed germination requirements of Lippia species (but see Galíndez et al 2016)and most of the study took a common garden approach, with seeds Fig. 4 Key issues identified for the main phases of seed conservation and propagation of useful plants in Mexico.…”
