Shoal-water deltaic systems are predominant during the deposition of the second member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation (Es 2 ) in the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China, and their presence is ascribed to low slopes, shallow water bodies and extremely slow tectonic subsidence. Integrated analyses of sedimentological, seismic geomorphological, palaeohydraulic, palynological and element-geochemical data reveal the influence of palaeoclimate on the morphology and depositional processes of distributary networks in shoal-water deltaic strata. Two contrasting palaeoclimatic stages were identified based on palynological and geochemical evidence, namely the earlier warm and humid climatic stage, and the later arid climatic stage. Compared with the earlier humid stage, the arid stage features much more abundant xerophytic species (Labiatae and Ephedra) as well as much higher Mg/Ca, Sr/Ba, and Th/U ratios and B content, indicating extensive evaporation. A third-order sequence stratigraphic unit was recognized, consisting of a transgressive systems tract with landward stepping parasequence sets, a poorly developed highstand systems tract, and a falling stage systems tract with basinward stepping parasequence sets, which were products of the humid and arid climatic stages, respectively. A series of distributary channel complexes exhibiting reticular patterns was identified in the strata corresponding to the humid climatic stage, with amalgamated, multi-storey distributary channel sandbodies showing a sinuosity range of 1.1 to 1.3. In contrast, the strata corresponding to the arid climatic stage are dominantly composed of distributary channel systems exhibiting dendritic forms, with prevalent single-storey channel fills and a low sinuosity range of 1.0 to 1.2. The dendritic system is more stable than the reticular counterpart due to the effects of frequent incision and limited vertical aggradation. Typical modern shoal-water deltas formed in different climatic conditions (i.e. Poyang Lake delta and Neales River delta) serve as analogues to the proposed conceptual depositional models of distributary networks related to palaeoclimate.

Topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and their relation to sediment- and sand-budget partitioning into deep-lake areas are far from being well understood, as compared with their marine counterparts of shelf edges. Two quantitatively distinctive topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and clinothem-stacking patterns were recognized in the Oligocene Qikou Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin and are quantified in terms of trajectory angles (Tse), topset thickness (Tt), forest thickness (Tf), bottomset thickness (Tb), and clinothem-set relief (Rc). Rising topset-to-forest trajectories have positive Tse of 0.15°–0.51° (averaging 0.35°). Ranges in Tt, Tf, Tb, and Rc of their associated progradational and aggradational clinothem sets are, respectively, 32.4–58.7 m (averaging 42.7 m), 76.9–176.2 m (averaging 148.3 m), 0 m, and 167.8–320.8 m (averaging 272.9 m). Falling topset-to-forest rollover trajectories, in contrast, have negative Tse of − 0.12° to − 0.02° (averaging − 0.06°). Ranges in Tt, Tf, Tb, and Rc of their associated progradational and downstepping clinothem sets are, respectively, 0 m, 266.0–395.7 m (averaging 333.4 m), 441.1–542.5 m (averaging 464.1), and 874.9–922.6 m (averaging 892.5 m). These two topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and clinothem-stacking patterns are closely linked to two distinctive patterns of sediment- and sand-volume partitioning into deep-lake areas, which are quantified in terms of Tt, Tb, and differential sediment aggradation of topset segments and forest-to-bottomset compartments (As/Ad). Rising topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and associated progradational and aggradational clinothem sets are characterized by aggradational topsets (reported as Tt of 32.4–58.7 m), a lack of time-equivalent bottomsets, and As/Ad of 0.22–0.87 (averaging 0.33), and are fronted by mud-dominated depositional deposits, with sporadic occurrence of thinner and regionally localized forest sands. They are, therefore, inefficient at delivering terrestrial sediments or sands into deep-lake settings. Falling topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and associated progradational and downstepping clinothem sets, in contrast, are characterized by toplap, erosional terminations but aggradational bottomsets (reported as Tb of 266.0–473.4 m), and As/Ad of 0, and are fronted by sand-rich depositional deposits, with widespread occurrence of thicker and regionally extensive time-equivalent deep-lake bottomset sands. They are, thus, efficient at delivering terrestrial sediments or sands into deep-lake settings. Topset-to-forest rollover trajectories and associated clinothem-stacking patterns are thus reliable predictors of sediment- and sand-volume partitioning into deep-lake areas, assisting greatly in developing a more dynamic stratigraphy.

This special issue dealing with the recent advances on modern and ancient clinoform‐stratified sedimentary successions arises from a European Geoscience Union (EGU) session “Clinoform drivers and stratigraphic products in siliciclastic and carbonate successions”, Vienna, April 2018. Clinoforms and clinothems represent a dominant architectural style of strata in many sedimentary environments, including deltaic and nondeltaic shorelines in both marine and lacustrine settings, and are one of the key building blocks of the sedimentary record. This Special Issue in Basin Research aspires to represent a step forward in understanding formation and preservation of these fundamental stratigraphic elements. As this Special Issue documents, a comprehensive understanding of clinoformal strata requires a multidisciplinary and multi‐scale approach. Sixteen papers present case studies from a variety of tectonic settings worldwide, investigated with an array of methods, including seismo‐stratigraphy, well logs, cores, high‐resolution biostratigraphy, outcrop studies and modern bathymetric data. While observations document sedimentary processes and products in sedimentary basins, numerical models are necessary to provide a quantitative basis for the extrapolation of these processes and strata at different temporal and spatial scales. The papers highlight at least five main research avenues that we briefly introduce and discuss below: (a) clinoforms and clinothems as sedimentary archives; (b) the nested nature of clinoformal strata and implications for the trajectory of the rollover point(s); (c) quantitative clinoform parameters and dynamic indices; (d) architecture, growth and sequence stratigraphy of marine versus lacustrine clinoformal strata; and (e) clinoforms and geological time. This introduction also contains brief descriptions of each paper of the Special Issue.
