This paper is the result of a scale validation process, applicable to social science research, which allows the constructs of otherness and coexistence and their relationship to be trasnformed into measurable, systematized variables. In turn, this scale is the product of a research project whose main objectives were (i) to demonstrate the relationship between coexistence as an independent variable and otherness as a dependent variable, and (ii) to create and statistically validate a scale to measure both variables, so to use it in applied research. The sample consisted of 600 participants. Three instruments were used: two semantic differentials and a 33-item questionnaire. The application was carried out virtually due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The method includes a mixed type of work, i.e., qualitative, and quantitative procedures. The results showed two factors, the other as strange or foreign and the other as equal. The final scale consisted of 10 items, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.86 and variance explaining 58% of the otherness.

The research finds justification given the incidence and magnitude they currently have in the human social sphere in the framework of the so-called Society 2.0. Derived from this framework, this approach must specially consider education as a vital social process. The same happens with information and communication technologies since they are frequently and increasingly used as mediation in educational contexts and because of their undeniable mediation in human interactions. Consequently, one of the most relevant questions tackled in this research refers to the disciplines required to provide a sufficiently broad theoretical and conceptual background for the scientific basis of the convergence between communication, edutainment, coexistence and otherness to effectively transform the last two concepts into measurable variables. The paper results from the content and a systemic analysis using ATLAS.ti software of published scientific documents for the last two decades about the phenomena of coexistence and otherness. As a main result, the researchers present a taxonomy that includes dimensions and indicators that enable the conversion of both constructs into measurable variables. Thus, a convergence to address the scientific study of coexistence and otherness from communication and edutainment emerged. The review also provides a theoretical basis for designing intervention models aimed at promoting coexistence. Edutainment is also incorporated as a novel tool to promote pro-social attitudes.

El artículo trata sobre la apertura estructural en familias adoptivas monoparentales, es decir, sobre los procesos que desarrollan de búsqueda de información acerca de las familias de nacimiento de los hijos y de establecimiento de contacto con ellas, así como sobre los obstáculos que encuentran para lograrlo. Se basa en una investigación etnográfica realizada en España y, principalmente, en entrevistas cualitativas llevadas a cabo con 61 mujeres solteras que, en su mayoría, habían adoptado transnacionalmente. Los resultados muestran que estas madres adoptivas son muy proactivas en la búsqueda de esa información y de ese contacto, concediendo a la vez una gran autonomía a sus hijos para establecerlo y/o mantenerlo. Dado que la apertura estructural de las familias es actualmente uno de los valores más apreciados en el ámbito de las adopciones, se cuestiona que se continúe discriminando a estas mujeres a la hora de adoptar, así como se destaca el papel creciente de las redes sociales en los procesos de «búsqueda de orígenes».
