Altered thiol status in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The thiol status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis is significantly different from that of controls. Plasma thiol levels are lower, albumin thiol reactivity is altered and intracellular thiol levels measured after hemoglobin precipitation are increased. These variations correlate with other indices of disease severity and are one measure of a disturbance in the degree of oxidation of the blood. Penicillamine, in common with other effective therapeutic agents, produces an increase in serum thiol concentrati… Show more

“…Furthermore, the decrease in lysate thiol significantly correlated with SOD activity. The link between glutathione and SOD activity could be related to an in vivo defense mechanism protecting tissues from peroxide damage [7].…”

“…Oxidative stress has a profound effect on thiol balance and can result in lowered plasma thiol [15], membrane thiol [ 161 and erythrocyte lysate thiol [17]. The latter measurement is predominantly glutathione (-2 mM).…”

“…It is mainly the fast thiol which is affected during treatment. 3 Both gold compounds and penicillamine would be expected to react with the available thiols in vivo. During treatment with these compounds, however, alteration in the plasma thiol concentration tends to be slow and follows signs ofclinical improvement rather than rises in plasma gold or penicillamine concentrations.…”
