Altered expression of circadian rhythm genes among individuals with a history of depression

Abstract: Background-Depression has been associated with several circadian rhythm perturbations, suggesting a disruption of the circadian clock system in affective disorders. The interaction of several circadian clock genes generates these daily circadian rhythms.

“…Similarly, one study suggests that clock gene expression in tissues related to pregnancy is altered in mice during pregnancy, although this has not been tested yet in humans . No data have been published thus far regarding the expression of clock genes during perinatal depression, while history of depression has been found to be associated with the increased expression of gene CLOCK that would be responsible for an anticipation of the sleep‐waking rhythms and of late insomnia typical in MDD . Furthermore, MDD, including perinatal depression, has been associated with different biological abnormalities including increased global inflammation .…”

“…Alterations in the expression of circadian genes — specifically Clock, Bmal1 and Per1 — have been observed in patients with a history of depression 68 . Animal models with mutations or disruptions in the circadian machinery show changes in mood and behavior.…”

“…172 Subjects with depression exhibit increased leukocyte clock mRNA expression. 173 Several Clock [174][175][176]177,178 single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been linked to MDD 174 and seasonal affective disorder, 177,178 as well as to bipolar depression 174,177,178 symptoms 175 and recurrence. 176 MT 2 receptor activation inhibits NO-induced increases in cyclic GMP 179 -of interest because plasma cGMP levels have been noted to be increased in patients developing depression after receiving 6 weeks of interferon treatment.…”
