Altered coupling of default-mode, executive-control and salience networks in Internet gaming disorder

Abstract: These findings suggest that the deficient modulation of ECN versus DMN by SN might provide a mechanistic framework to better understand the neural basis of IGD and might provide novel evidence for the triple-network model in IGD.

“…Altered interaction between the SN and other brain networks has been suggested to contribute to the motivational, affective, and cognitive characteristics observed in addiction ( 62 ). Our current results and previous evidence ( 63 ) indicate that FC alterations in the SN, especially hyperconnectivity between the DMN and the SN, play pivotal roles in the pathophysiology of IGD. IGD subjects without comorbid depression also showed stronger sgACC FC with the left dlPFC than the other groups.…”

“…The precuneus comprises a central region of the default mode network 79 , which has the highest metabolic response during rest 80 and strong connections with adjacent and remote regions 81 . A dysfunctional default mode network has been reported in chronic cocaine users 82 , 83 , people with Internet use disorders 84 86 , and heroin dependent patients 87 . A recent review of addiction and precuneus function summarized evidence that the precuneus has been repeatedly implicated in exteroceptive processes, which play a critical role in the conditioned cue response in addiction 88 .…”

“…Growing evidence suggests that addictions are not only associated with structural and functional breakdown of isolated regions but rather with system-level alterations between brain regions 14 . Functional brain imaging data have revealed that the human brain is topologically organized into a set of coherent spatio-temporal networks, such as default-mode network (DMN) 15 . The DMN was first mentioned by Shulman in 1997 16 who noted several brain areas in the cerebral cortex that constantly decreased their activity while performing highly demanding tasks.…”

“…Several studies revealed altered DMN in addictions. These researches focused primarily on gambling disorder 20 and Internet gaming disorder 15,20 or substance addictions, such as heroin 21 , alcohol 22 , nicotine 23 , and cannabis 24 . It was also demonstrated that functional connectivity within DMN may predict successful quitting 25 , the intensity of withdrawal-induced craving 26 and the degree of cognitive decline 27 in addictions.…”
