Altered colonocyte differentiation may lead to decreased electrolyte and fluid absorption in the ileocolon of IBD patients by affecting the expression pattern of the responsible ion transporters

Abstract: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) characterized by disturbed homeostasis of the immune system, the intestinal mucosa and the microbiome, causing ‘leaky’ intestinal epithelial barrier with altered fluid and electrolyte absorption leading to diarrhea.
