Alterations in the Function of Cerebral Dopaminergic and Serotonergic Systems Following Electroacupuncture and Moxibustion Applications: Possible Correlates with Their Antistress and Psychosomatic Actions

Abstract: Alterations in cerebral monoamines following application of electroacupuncture were investigated using conscious rats with and without application of restraining stress. The dopamine and serotonin levels were significantly decreased in the nucleus accumbens, caudate putamen, and lateral hypothalamus and increased in the dorsal raphe nucleus by restraining stress. On the other hand, application of electroacupuncture on the lumbar and hindlimb segments eliminated the above changes in dopamine, while the changes … Show more

“…Recently, neurochemical studies on the relationship between the contents of dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites in the central nervous system (CNS) and application of acupuncture were reported (Kato 2000;Yano et al 2004). However, the effects of acupuncture on the in vivo release of DA and 5-HT in the CNS are still unclear.…”

“…However, unfortunately, we can not fully understand how moxibustion worked. We can just speculate the mechanism might be related with its promoting effect on cortical cerebral blood flow (Uchida et al, 2003), and its stimulating effect on central nervous system (Yano et al, 2004). …”

“…Acupuncture is useful in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia because of its effect on the dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons and the opiate system as well as for its pain relief feature. These effects tend to interact with each other (Spence et al, 2004;Yano et al, 2004;Nedstrand et al, 2006).…”
