Alterations in Nocturnal Serum Melatonin Levels In Humans With Growth and Aging*

Abstract: The available data on potential alterations in serum melatonin (MLT) levels during a human lifetime are fragmentary and inconsistent. We, therefore, measured day- and nighttime serum MLT concentrations in 367 subjects (210 males and 157 females), aged 3 days to 90 yr. Blood samples were collected between 0730 and 1000 h and between 2300 and 0100 h. Serum MLT levels were measured by RIA. The mean nighttime serum MLT concentration was low during the first 6 months of life, i.e. 27.3 +/- 5.4 (+/- SE) pg/mL (0.12 … Show more

“…Secondly, there is no association between pineal size and age (Hasegawa et al 1987), which confirms the predominant, genetical determination of pineal size (Schmidt et al 1995;Bhatnagar 1990). Thirdly, there is a negative correlation between age and aMT6s (Sack et al 1986;Sharma et al 1989;Humbert and Pevet 1994;Zhdanova et al 1997;Waldhauser et al 1988;Myers and Badia 1995). Figure 1.…”

“…Thus, the difference observed in that 1997). An investigation of the relationship between melatonin study may be explained by the age-related decline in melatonin phase and sleep may provide a better clue as to the connection excretion (Sack et al 1986;Sharma et al 1989;Waldhauser et al between the melatonin and sleep systems. This is more likely 1988).…”

“…Aged male rhesus macaques, like aged men, show a significant decline in the amplitude of their 24-h melatonin (Figs. 1a, e;Iguchi et al 1982;Waldhauser et al 1988;Sharma et al 1989;Thomas and Miles 1989;Haimov et al 1994;Zeitzer et al 1999;Roth et al 2001;Downs et al 2004) and testosterone rhythms (Figs. 1b, f;Plymate et al, 1989;Feldman et al 2002;Luboshitzky et al 2003;Garyfallou et al 2005;Kaufman and Vermeulen 2005;Page et al 2007;Schlatt et al 2008;Bremner 2010), and an even more pronounced attenuation of their 24-h DHEAS rhythm (Figs.…”
