Alterations in Circulating Fatty Acid Composition in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract: SLE patients, regardless of their history of CVD, have altered plasma and RBC FA composition favoring inflammation. The use of prednisone was associated with differences in FA profile.

“…Although a similar pattern of grouping of FFA species in the PCA was observed in rheumatoid arthritis patients by our group (24), differences among FFA species between patients and controls were not observed in the case of lupus. Interestingly, no differences in plasma FFA profiling were observed in a previous study with lupus patients (63), although slight alterations in the polyunsaturated fatty acids were reported in those with a previous history of CVD. Our results are, at least in part, in line with these findings, although differences in the experimental procedures between both studies are important.…”
