Alteration of skin condition in newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care: a concept analysis

Abstract: Objectives: to analyze the concept of alteration of skin condition in newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Methods: this is a concept analysis operationalized by scoping review. The search was conducted in three parts: the first, in sources like Scopus and Web of Science; the second, in Google Scholar®; and the third, through a parallel list of references. Results: according to the types of skin, the most frequent alterations were erythema/redness and pressure injuries. The concept analysis… Show more

“…The newborn, due to his linguistic disability and inadequate condition, is exposed to the procedures that need to be carried out and also at the mercy of those around him in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This fact makes caring for the skin of newborns, especially premature ones, a challenge for nursing in maintaining its integrity (Araújo et al, 2022;Soares et al, 2023).…”

“…Therefore, when it comes to care for the neonatal group specifically, care techniques and maneuvers need to be delicate, careful and with scientific support, where risks to child safety are often associated with adverse events and are responsible for deaths that could be avoided. , when preventive care was carried out responsibly (Prazeres et al, 2021;Araújo et al, 2022).…”

“…Newborns prior to the 37 weeks of gestation have an immature stratum corneum, which implies structural differences on the skin compared with the pediatric and adult population. 17 For newborns, it is recommended to place cotton or gel pads on the pressure points, avoid compression and inadvertent elongation of the vascular-nervous bundles, protect the eyes, fix the orotracheal tube and the respiratory circuit. The prone position is common for corrections of neurological congenital malformations and if there is pressure on the abdomen due to an inadequate position, ventilation is altered, compressed vena cava and increased epidural venous pressure, bleeding, and edema on the tongue and face.…”

“…The neonate"s gestation or circumstance at delivery has a right away relation to the intrinsic elements that boom their chance of skin damage (Broom et al, 2019). Neonatal skin is developmentally and physiologically various to pediatric and adult skin, making it more susceptible to problems, so it is a challenge to maintain the integrity of this delicate organ during the critical period (Faria & Kamada, 2018). Protection and preservation of the skin of neonates are significantly important; because skin is ultimate important protective mechanism in neonates and the largest organ in the human body, serving essential purposes and a protective barrier of the internal organs, thermoregulation, immunological function, and protection from invasion of microbes and ultraviolet rays (Albahrani & Hunt, 2019).…”
