Alteration agronomic traits performance of sweet potato cultivars from drylands to paddy fields

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate changes in agronomic performances of some sweet potato cultivars planted in the rain-fed dry land and paddy fields. Completely randomized block design with three replications on a single factor of 12 sweet potato cultivars was done in two locations. The first location is the rain-fed dry land that formerly planted corn; located in Jatikerto, Kromengan District, and second is an irrigated paddy field that previously planted with rice, located in Wringinsongo, Tumpang District, Malan… Show more

“…At least 4–6 months period without frost is required for successful sweet potato cultivation. Sweet potato is a drought-tolerant crop; however, storage root yield increases with increasing soil moisture content [ 1 , 16 ] due to the deep root system. Therefore, the regions with well-distributed rainfall such as temperature zones between 30 and 40° latitudes in both hemispheres or the regions with irrigation infrastructure favor the cultivation of sweet potato [ 1 , 17 ].…”

“…Sweet potatoes are food crops with wide ecological adaptability, drought-tolerant, often cultivated in the marginal soils under low agricultural input and are able to grow with limited water available for irrigation (Motsa et al, 2015a;Motsa et al, 2015b;Chipungu et al, 2018;Lestari et al, 2019). Sweet potato plantations can reduce soil erosion because of its vines' ability to cover the soil surface (Oshunsanya, 2016).…”

“…Other research of sweet potato on dry land showed that the crop produced as much as 5.35-17.47 ton ha -1 of storage roots and 11.76-22.88 ton ha -1 of vines. Whereas when planted on paddy fields, the production of storage roots could reach 19.90-64.52 ton ha -1 and vines ranging from 11.91-32.09 ton ha -1 (Lestari et al, 2019).…”
