Show more

“…The similarities with this case can be explained by an identical LULC change trend (expansion of forest areas and contraction of agriculture and shrubland areas). Considering just vegetation, however, our results were higher than those estimated by Pinheiro et al (2014) in an area adjacent to our study area based in changes over a period of 48 yrs (0.272 Mg C ha Table 7. Total carbon sequestered (Mg C) and sequestration rate (Mg C ha environmental and geographical context that can influence the carbon SRs in each vegetation cover type.…”

“…Current population is 26,000 mostly in the city of Bragança. Despite depopulation and agricultural abandonment observed over the last decades in rural parishes of the study area Pinheiro et al 2014), the main socio-economical activities in the area are still related to agriculture and forestry even if major sources of income of land owners are in the services sector in the city of Bragança.…”

“…Scenarios in the present study aimed to explore how different pathways of landscape evolution may affect FRC and FPES in the future, considering the current trend of the landscape towards abandonment as the baseline. We built the scenarios based on the major transition patterns observed for two parishes within the study area, identified after the analysis of the probability transition matrices (from year 1992 to 2006) available in the studies of Azevedo et al (2011b) and Pinheiro et al (2014).…”

“…Administratively, the study area encompasses 6 parishes and parts of 13 others ( Figure 1) and includes the city of Braganç a (population 24,000). Parishes have undergone rapid socioeconomic change in the last decades, in particular depopulation and partial agricultural abandonment, which have impacted the landscape (Azevedo et al 2011;Pinheiro et al 2014). The Alto Sabor basin exhibited a relatively high degree of change from 1990 to 2006.…”
