ALS Superbend magnet system

Abstract: Abstract-The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is preparing to upgrade the Advanced Light Source (ALS) with three superconducting dipoles (Superbends). In this paper we present the final magnet system design which incorporates R&D test results and addresses the ALS operational concerns of alignment, availability, and economy. The design incorporates conduction-cooled Nb-Ti windings and HTS current leads, epoxy-glass suspension straps, and a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler to supply steady state refrigeration. W… Show more

“…In general, the physical size of the device or its mass is not a dominant factor in the selection of the cooler. The Superbend magnets, which have a cold mass of 1700 kg and a surface area of nearly 10 m 2 are cooled using a single 1.5 W cooler [15], [16]. A number of factors come into play when one is selecting the number of coolers that might be used to cool a single device.…”

“…Setting the magnet current at 250 A, roughly in the middle of the normal operating range, measured values of 2 c and 3 c were used to position the magnet assemblies in order to cancel the quadrupole components. This method worked very well, as is illustrated in Table II, which shows the results of magnet #3 positioning.…”

“…Section II will summarize magnetic test results; Section III will summarize cryogenic test results. The design, requirements, and Superbend project have been discussed elsewhere [3], [4], [5]. Manuscript Figure 1 below, shows a picture of Superbend #1 installed around an alignment fixture on the test stand.…”

“…The first of four Superbend magnets was successfully built by Wang NMR [7]. A picture of the first magnet cryostat system can be seen in First Article On August 24, the first Superbend magnet was successfully charged and ramped to full current without training.…”
