Alpine Ski Injuries and Their Prevention

Abstract: Alpine skiing is a popular sport with significant risk of injury. Since the 1970s, injury rates have dropped from approximately 5 to 8 per 1000 skier-days to about 2 to 3 per 1000 skier-days. The nature of the injuries has also been transformed over the same period. Lower leg injuries are becoming less common while the incidence of knee sprains and upper extremity injuries is becoming more common. Much of this change can be attributed to advancements in binding technology, which effectively reduces lower leg i… Show more

“…The patterns of winter sport injuries have dramatically changed [28]. Since the 1970s, their incidence has dropped by half while upper extremity fractures and knees sprains became the most common injury types [29,30]. Our results are consistent with previous studies evidencing an increase in the volume of orthopaedic procedures performed during winter around ski resorts [5,6,8,9,10,11,31,32].…”

“…Током наредне декаде тај број се смањио на 3 до 6 на 1000 ски-дана. Од периода 1990 -2000. година, број повреда стагнира у граница-ма 2 до 3 на 1000 ски-дана (Koehle, Lloyd-Smith, & Taunton, 2002). У анализи из 2010. године број повреда је износио 2,5 на 1000 ски-дана (NSAA, 2013).…”

“…arious mechanisms of ACL injury have been described, 14,25,33 including the following. (1) A combined valgus-external rotation mechanism of injury occurs during a fall, when the skier's inside edge engages the snow, while the lower leg externally rotates and abducts as the body of the skier continues forward.…”

“…18 Many factors have been associated with the change in injury rates to the knee. 25,33 Ski boots, for example, have become stiffer, with an upper cuff that reaches closer to the knee. Changes in ski design allow for easier turning and better grip on the snow, which enable the transfer of torque through the boot to the knee when a skier is off balance.…”
