Alpine-scale 3D geospatial modeling: Applying new techniques to old problems

Abstract: The investigation of geologically complex settings in Alpine or mountainous terrains is still dominated by traditional data collection and analytical techniques. The application of computer-aided geometric design and threedimensional (3D) visualization and interpretation is rarely applied to such settings, despite its signifi cant benefi ts. This contribution uses the Gosau Muttekopf Basin (Eastern Alps, Austria) to demonstrate that the application of 3D geospatial models can both provide new insights into our… Show more

“…Studies that undertake palinspastic restoration of turbidite systems, which revises the geometry and dimensions of systems to the configuration during deposition, are rare and tend to be in small depocenters (e.g. Fernandez et al, 2004;Falivene et al, 2006;Paton et al, 2007;Aas et al 2010;Durand-Riard et al, 2011).…”

“…For the analysis of the Lenghu5 fold-thrust belt we have integrated both remote sensing data (landsat images) and field observations, which are outlined below, to derive a 3D geospatial model (Paton et al, 2007). We applied the following data collection and analysis techniques: 1) Stratigraphy logging: to constrain the detailed stratigraphy within the Lenghu5 foldthrust belt three well exposed traverses (2150 m / 1.34 mi total stratigraphic thickness) across the structure were logged; this corresponds to HW1, HW2 and FW, representing hanging-wall section 1, hanging-wall section 2, and footwall section, respectively (Fig.…”
