Alpha‐tocopherol and ginger are protective on Cyclophosphamide‐induced gonadal toxicity in adult male albino rats

Abstract: Background and aim:The ameliorative effect of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and Zingiber officinale (ginger) on cyclophosphamide-induced gonadal toxicity are studied in adult male rats. Methods: Forty-four adult male albino rats were used in this study in four groups. Group I served as normal control, groups II-IV received cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally at a daily dose of 20 mg per kg body weight for 7 days but group III and IV received supplementary vitamin E and ginger respectively for two weeks starting … Show more

“…The number of viable sperm was also significantly reduced in the CP treated group compared to the control group. This finding is in line with previous studies that indicate CP decreases sperm motility and viability in rats ( 46 , 51 ). Additionally, an increment in number of motile and live sperm was seen in CP groups supplemented with AM especially at doses 300 mg kg −1 /day and 500 mg kg −1 /day compared to the CP only treated group.…”

“…The beneficial effects of ginger on sperm parameters of diabetic rats have also been reported (Hafez, ). Moreover, it compensated the harmful effect of toxic substances including sodium arsenite, alloxan, cyclophosphamide, gentamicin, deltamethrin, aluminium chloride and busulphan on epididymal sperm parameters (Bordbar et al., ; Hafez, ; Morakinyo et al., ; Moselhy et al., ; Sabik & Abd El‐Rahman, ; Sakr & Al‐Amoudi, ; Zahedi et al., ).…”

“…Tribestan (patented extract of ginger) increases libido, infertility and menopausal disorders (Imani and Ainehchi, 2014). Also, ginger increases estrogen, pregnenolone and testosterone levels and sexual potency in men (Sabik et al 2009). Despite researches have been done on effects of the ginger on male reproductive sys-tem, its role on sex hormones in blood and testicular levels is not fully elicited.…”
