Objective: Little research has addressed the relationships among infant temperament, eating styles and obesity risk. To address this gap, we tested whether infant temperament and eating patterns at the age of 1 year are associated with a greater increase in standardized weight status, and greater obesity risk at 6 years of age. Design: A secondary, prospective analysis of the Colorado Adoption Study was conducted. The main predictor variables were infant temperament (that is, emotionality, activity, attention span-persistence, reaction to food and soothability) and eating domains (that is, reactivity to food, predictable appetite and distractability at mealtime) at the age of 1 year, along with the body mass index (BMI) of biological mothers. The outcome measures were child weight and height (length) assessed at ages 1 through 6 years, from which weight-for-length and BMI were computed along with the standardized indexes (z-scores) and percentiles. Overweight/obesity status was computed at each year as well. Participants: A primarily White sample of 262 boys and 225 girls, assessed at ages 1 through 6 years, along with their mothers. Results: Among boys, greater attention span-persistence was associated with reduced standardized weight status gain (b ¼ À0.15, Po0.05) and reduced obesity risk (odds ratio (OR) ¼ 0.46, P ¼ 0.06). Among girls, greater soothability and negative reaction to food were associated with greater standardized weight status gain (b ¼ 0.19, Po0.01; and b ¼ 0.16, Po0.05, respectively) and increased obesity risk (OR ¼ 3.72, P ¼ 0.03; and OR ¼ 2.81, P ¼ 0.08, respectively). Biological mothers' obesity status predicted obesity risk in boys (OR ¼ 3.07, P ¼ 0.01) and girls (OR ¼ 5.94, P ¼ 0.03). Conclusions: Male infants with less attention span, and female infants with greater soothability or a more negative food reaction, showed greater increases in standardized weight and were more likely to be overweight/obese at the age of 6 years. The role of infant temperament in pediatric obesity onset warrants greater research.

RESUMENObjetivo: evaluar exploratoriamente la validez y consistencia interna del Inventario de Despistaje Preescolar de Minneapolis (IDPM), y su relación entre con el TEPSI, en una muestra de niños peruanos. Material y métodos: participaron 52 niños, entre los 3 y 5 años de edad, provenientes de un programa no escolarizado de Educación Preescolar en Chorrillos (Lima). Se determinó la validez de los ítems (dificultad y discriminación del IDPM) y las correlaciones con los sub tests del TEPSI. Resultados: la consistencia interna fue 0.80; los ítems tuvieron moderada dificultad; las correlaciones entre el IDPM y TEPSI fueron estadísticamente significativas y entre moderadas y altas. Conclusiones: el IDPM es un instrumento con aceptables cualidades métricas y puede ser de utilidad para apoyar las evaluaciones de despistaje, y por lo tanto puede ser incorporado en los cursos de desarrollo del niño y prácticas profesionales. The study assesses the difficulty and discrimination of items, and the reliability and validity of MPSI with TEPSI. Results: The MPSI items show discriminative and medium difficulty; the internal consistency was 0.80; the MPSI-TEPSI correlations between moderate and high. Conclusion. In this initial assessment, the MPSI is an instrument with acceptable metric proprieties, and it can, therefore the MSPI can be incorporated into courses in child development and professional practices.

Universidad de Valladolid, Españar e s u M e n El objetivo de este estudio se centró en poner a prueba la invarianza de la sintomatología del Trastorno por Déficit de Atención con Hiperactividad (TDAH) en función del género, en una muestra de 634 niños. Se comprobó, en primer lugar, el ajuste de cinco modelos factoriales mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio, y se utilizó la regresión logística ordinal como método de estimación del funcionamiento diferencial del ítem (DIF), tanto uniforme como no uniforme. Los resultados pusieron de manifiesto que: (a) el modelo que presentó mejor ajuste fue el de tres factores correlacionados y (b) no existe DIF en función del género de los niños evaluados, ni en la modalidad de calificación ordinal (escala de 1 a 4) ni en la modalidad de calificación binaria (0-1) de los ítems. Estos resultados refrendan el hecho de que en el Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-IV-TR, no se establezcan criterios diferenciales para el diagnóstico del TDAH en niños y niñas. A B s t r A c tThe aim of this paper was to test the invariance of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a sample of 634 children attending to gender. We firstly examined the fit to the data of five models using confirmatory factor analysis, and ordinal logistic regression was used as a method of estimation of both uniform and non-uniform differential item functioning (DIF). The results showed that (a) the three correlated factors model was the best fit model, and (b) there was no gender-specific DIF, either in the ordinal rating form (scale of 1 to 4) or the binary rating form (0-1). These results support that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR does not establish ADHD differential diagnosis criteria for boys and girls.
