Alpha-1-fucosidase as a prognostic indicator for hepatocellular carcinoma following hepatectomy: a large-scale, long-term study

Abstract: Background:Preoperative alpha-L-fucosidase (AFU) has been used as a diagnostic biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but its role as a prognostic predictor after partial hepatectomy has not been well defined. The study aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of preoperative serum AFU for HCC patients after hepatic resection. Methods:A retrospective training data set and a prospective validation data set were used to evaluate the prognosis of HCC after partial hepatectomy. A total of 669 patient… Show more

“…37 Phosphotyrosine interaction domain containing one (PID1) function as a growth-inhibitory gene in brain tumors 38 and is a potent intracellular inhibitor of the insulin signaling pathway during obesity in humans and mice. 39 Fucosidase, alpha-L-1, tissue (FUCA1) is a liposomal enzyme that degrades a variety of fucosecontaining fucoglycoconjugates and has been proposed as a promising tumor marker in the diagnosis 40 and prognosis 41 of hepatocellular carcinoma. Finally, G protein-coupled receptor 15 (GPR15) acts as a chemokine receptor for human immunodeficiency virus.…”

“…Its expression increases with liver insult similar to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and HCC patients. 85 It is one of the early HCC biomarkers and has a cut-off value of 870 nm/mL/h. Interestingly, it is raised preceding six months of development of HCC, and its value is over 700 nm/mL/h in 85% of HCC patients.…”

“…FUCA2 has been found to be essential for Helicobacter pylori adhesion during its infection of gastric cells (16). ␣-Fucosidases are also of considerable clinical interest because the presence of ␣-fucosidase activity in serum has been used in the diagnosis for hepatocellular cancers for decades (17).…”
