Alotanypus vittigera (Edwards) comb. nov.: adult redescription, immature description and a phylogenetic analysis of the genus (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae)

Abstract: Anatopynia vittigera Edwards is transfered to Alotanypus. The male and female of A. vittigera comb. nov. are redescribed and immatures are described and illustrated. A cladistic analysis including one species of each Macropelopiini genus was conducted in order to assess the phylogenetic position of Alotanypus and to provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus. Adults and immatures were included in the analysis where discrete and continuos characters were considered. The cladistic analysis demonstra… Show more

“…The species Alotanypus oliveirai , which was recently transferred to this genus (Cranston & Epler, ), lies at the base of the genus, as had been reported by Siri et al . (), whereas Gressitius antarcticus was sister to the remaining Alotanypus species. For this reason – and also because the characters used by Sublette & Wirth () to define Gressitius were likewise shared with Alotanypus – we established that this genus is a junior synonym of Alotanypus and the new combination Alotanypus antarcticus comb.…”

“…The close relationship between Radotanypus and Brundiniella previously has been described by Fittkau & Murray (), Murray & Fittkau (), Siri et al . (), and Cranston & Epler (). This clade was supported by the presence of the objective synapomorphy of between seven and 11 taeniate setae on segment VII of the pupa in our analysis.…”

“…Siri et al . () emended the generic description of Alotanypus , noting that the adult male antennal ratio (AR) was lower or slightly higher than 2.0 and postnotals were present in at least one species. The female of Alotanypus may be distinguished by the seminal capsules with asymmetrical neck.…”
