Alopecia Following Bicoronal Incisions

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Multiple techniques may be used to perform bicoronal incisions, and alopecia is a known postoperative complication of this procedure. To date, no large studies exist comparing alopecia outcomes among bicoronal incision techniques with and without the use of Raney clips.OBJECTIVE To determine (1) whether postoperative alopecia is more common when bicoronal incisions are performed with monopolar cautery, Colorado microdissection tip cautery, or traditional cold steel and (2) whether this outcome is af… Show more

“…A study by Kadakia et al showed that alopecia can be avoided by using a cold steel scalpel for skin and subcutaneous incision and avoiding cautery and Raney clips. 18 Trichophytic wound closure, commonly used in hair transplant surgery, involves the tangential excision of the upper or lower wound margin to approximately 1 mm. After this is performed, the wound edges are approximated, and hair grows through the incision line.…”

“…3 The best surgical strategy for treating the craniomaxillofacial skeleton should permit for excellent aesthetic outcomes, maximal accessibility of the facial skeleton, and little risk of harm to the facial architecture. 4,5 Hemicoronal, preauricular, infraorbital, lateral eyebrow, and bicoronal approaches are only a few of the layouts that have been discussed. 6 The upper and middle third of the face may be surgically exposed while causing the least amount of damage attributable to the bicoronal technique, which is considered to be both trendy and adaptable.…”
