AlMg6 to Titanium and AlMg6 to Stainless Steel Weld Interface Properties after Explosive Welding

Abstract: This paper studies the weld interface microstructure and mechanical properties of AlMg6-stainless steel and AlMg6-titanium bimetals produced using explosive welding. The microhardness (HV), tear strength, and microstructure of the weld seams were evaluated. The interface of the weld zones had a flat profile. No structural disturbances or heterogeneity in the AlMg6-titanium weld interface were observed. On the other hand, the bimetal AlMg6-stainless steel had extensive zones of cast inclusions in the 10–30 µm r… Show more

“…One of the advantages of EW is that it can produce a welding joint of the materials that are difficult or impossible to weld using conventional fusion welding methods [ 2 , 3 ]. For example, it can be used to join dissimilar metals, or metals with big difference in their melting points [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. However, EW has a number of disadvantages too.…”

“…However, cars are not only the main field of interest for constructors using bimetals. Those materials are also present in power plants, shipbuilding, architecture, chemistry, and food productions [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. There are many different possible technologies that can be used for both joining and final shaping.…”

“…The value of this bent is influenced by many factors, including differences in the deformation resistance of the bimetal components or the conditions of the rolling process. Being mindful of obtaining a simple double-layer sheet metal, the asymmetry of the peripheral speed of the work rolls was used, as described by the equation [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 20 ]: where:…”

“…In this regard, different welding technologies viz. explosive welding [40,41], magnetic pulse welding [42], underwater explosion [43] and laser impact welding [44] have been extensively used in the past, and the limitations of these techniques are mentioned by Ngaile et al [45]. Recently, vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW) techniques have been extensively used to weld the target with varying oblique angles for a different class of materials including AA1100-O to AISI1018 [46], 15-5 PH SS [47], Cu110 to CP-Ti [48,49], OFHC copper to Grade 2 Ti [50] and many more combinations of exotic materials.…”
