Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the reading frequency and habits of the prospective teachers of German in both mother tongue and foreign language. Approaches to reading are constantly changing and students are affected by these changes. Current studies indicate that the reading habit in Turkey is generally weak. However, since reading is an effective factor both on students' professional life and academic achievement and foreign language learning, the research is important for determining the reading habits of future teachers. In this study, firstly the importance of reading was emphasized. Then the aim of the research, method, findings, interpretations and conclusion were discussed. As a research design the screening model was used in the research. The study was carried out in the academic year 2018-2019 with a total of 150 prospective Education. In the study, the Turkish version of the Students Weekly Reading Habits Questionnaire, which includes expressions for determining the reading habits and reading frequencies of prospective teachers in mother tongue and foreign language, was used. Frequency and percentage values of these answers were calculated by determining the answers given by the students participating in the research. According to the research findings, the reading types and reading habits of prospective teachers of German vary. However, when the findings related to the reading frequency of the students were examined, it wasfound that the students generally read less in the mother tongue and foreign language and they needed in this regard to be directed.
