Alma Observations of a Candidate Molecular Outflow in an Obscured Quasar

Abstract: We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array CO (1-0) and CO (3-2) observations of SDSS J135646.10+102609.0, an obscured quasar and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy with two merging nuclei and a known 20 kpc scale ionized outflow. The total molecular gas mass is M mol ≈ 9 +19 −6 × 10 8 M , mostly distributed in a compact rotating disk at the primary nucleus (M mol ≈ 3 × 10 8 M ) and an extended tidal arm (M mol ≈ 5 × 10 8 M ). The tidal arm is one of the most massive molecular tidal features known; we… Show more

“…from previous studies in literature (Greene et al, 2012;Cicone et al, 2014;Harrison et al, 2014;Sun et al, 2014;Brusa et al, 2015;Cresci et al, 2015;Feruglio et al, 2015), we clearly observe a relation between outflow properties and AGN luminosities (L AGN ). The velocity and mass rate of the fast gas increase with the L AGN supporting the scenario that these outflows are AGN-driven and their properties depend on the AGN activity.…”

“…10 the outflow kinetic energy is plotted against the AGN bolometric luminosity. We included in the figure A148, page 12 of 15 other known ionized (Greene et al 2012;Harrison et al 2014;Carniani et al 2015;Brusa et al 2015a;Cresci et al 2015) and molecular (squares, Cicone et al 2014;Sun et al 2014;Feruglio et al 2015) outflows. The dotted, dashed, and solid lines represent the fraction of AGN bolometric luminosity in the form of the outflow power at 0.1%, 5%, and 100%, respectively.…”

“…So far, there are only a few observations of both molecular and ionised AGN-driven outflows in the same galaxy: SDSS J1356+1026 is an example of an obscured QSO where molecular and ionised outflows have different properties, that is outflow rates, velocities, radii, morphologies, and time scales (Greene et al 2012;Sun et al 2014).…”
