Allyl ether of aralkyl phenolic resin with low melt viscosity and its Alder-ene blends with bismaleimide: synthesis, curing, and laminate properties

Abstract: This paper outlines the synthesis and characterization of O‐allyl aralkyl phenolic (O‐allyl Xylok, OAX) resins having low melt viscosity and its Alder‐ene blends with 2, 2′‐bis 4‐[(4′‐maleimido phenoxy) phenyl] propane. The blends manifested a three‐stage curing pattern that converged to a two‐stage pattern on enhancing the maleimide content. The polymerization kinetics of typical allyl and maleimide rich resin systems showed apparent activation energy increasing and pre‐exponential factor decreasing from ene … Show more

“…Terephthalyl alcohol is one of the raw materials of xylok resin [32,33,34]. An aralkyl group was introduced into the resin skeleton by a chemical reaction, thereby imparting excellent heat resistance, water absorption resistance to the material and improving the dielectric properties of the material.…”

“…Specifically, in BD systems, “Ene” addition and “Diels–Alder” reaction (ca. 252 °C) take place between allyl groups of allyl phenol structure and imide groups in BDM, successively [Figure (a)], this process could not happen in BA and BB systems until allyl ether bonds at the end of prepolymers have changed into allyl phenol structure through Claisen rearrangement occurring at ca. 265 °C [Figure (b)].…”
